Refurbished iMac 18,1 – perfect for homeschooling, digital learning and much more!
This carefully refurbished iMac with a 21.5" (54.6 cm) screen comes with the user-friendly Zorin OS 18 Education – a secure and modern Linux operating system developed specifically for education. (More information at: https://zorin.com/os/)
Included free of charge: a new USB sound card and new speakers (e.g. Creative Pebble or a comparable model). This makes your iMac sound much better than with the built-in speakers. We tested it ourselves with Metallica’s "Hardwired" and were thrilled with the sound.
We have also equipped it with widely used software. Just start it up and get going with:
  • Brave
  • Signal
  • Telegram
  • Zoom
  • OnlyOffice (the best alternative to Word & co., open source and free forever)
Unpack, plug in, start and a few seconds later you’re already surfing, learning and more.

Year of manufacture: approx. 2017. System: Zorin OS 18 Education (Linux) – this makes the device run much faster and more securely than with the old macOS, and it continues to receive security updates. What is the device good for, and how good?

Internet, email, streaming★★★★★Smooth, with a large screen and good sound thanks to the extra speakers.
Office & school★★★★★OnlyOffice, LibreOffice, Microsoft 365 and Google Docs.
Images & art★★★★★Krita, GIMP, Inkscape, Photopea – with a Wacom tablet, a great drawing station.
Music / DAW★★★★★Audacity, LMMS, Ardour; with the Creative speakers, making music is fun.
Video★★★★★Full HD clips are doable with Kdenlive or Shotcut, 4K isn’t.
3D printing & modelling★★★★★We recommend OrcaSlicer, Bambu Studio and Tinkercad without reservation.
Programming & learning★★★★★Python, Scratch, VS Code, web development.
Retro & casual gaming★★★★★RetroArch, DOSBox, ScummVM, PPSSPP and indie games on a big screen.
Modern gaming★★★★★Undemanding Steam games at low settings; current 3D titles don’t work.
Video calls★★★★★Zoom is installed; Teams and Meet run in the browser. Camera and microphone work.

Good to know

  • Programs: Mac programs (e.g. iMovie, GarageBand) and the desktop versions of Adobe and Microsoft Office do not run. Use the web versions (Microsoft 365, Adobe Express, Photopea) or the free alternatives above.
  • Performance: dual-core processor (4 threads) with 8 GB RAM – strong for everyday use, learning and creative work, too weak for 4K video and modern games.
  • Storage: 256 GB internal. System and security updates run quite normally on the internal SSD. Optionally, you can connect a modern external SSD for additional storage or backups; we can supply suitable drives on request.
  • Age: the device is around 8 years old but has been checked and refurbished. Individual parts may nevertheless fail at some point due to age.
  • Wi-Fi & camera: the drivers for Wi-Fi and the FaceTime camera are installed. If they are missing after a major system upgrade, you can reinstall them in a few steps using the guides on help.edumental.ch – our support is happy to help.
  • Keyboard: all keys work as labelled. The only Zorin peculiarity: the Super key (⌘) opens the start menu. The original keyboard and mouse are included.
  • Wacom: Wacom tablets can be connected without any problems – ideal for handwriting, drawing and image editing.
