The perfect budget alternative to new, much more expensive devices.
Despite its age, thanks to the new operating system the iMac can keep up with newer, more expensive devices.

Strong privacy protection with the intuitive Zorin 18.

Classic timeless design made from high-quality materials.
Loud built-in sound. We tested it with Metallica and our heads were nodding to the beat.
Including original keyboard and mouse.
The DVD drive is declared defective and should no longer be used.
That is why, despite its very good external condition, the device is graded "B" and priced accordingly lower.
However, it is possible to connect an external DVD player.
Zorin OS offers an almost seamless transition from Windows / macOS and comes with pre-installed learning software.
Zorin OS is based on Linux, is ad-free and much less vulnerable to viruses than Windows; additional antivirus software is usually not needed.

Condition BDVD drive faulty, otherwise very good
Year of manufacture: approx. 2009. System: Zorin OS 18 Education (Linux) – this makes the device run much faster and more securely than with the old macOS, and it continues to receive security updates. Pre-installed: Brave, Signal, Telegram, Zoom, OnlyOffice (removed free of charge on request). Ports: 4× USB 2.0, FireWire 800, SD card. The DVD drive is faulty; an external DVD player can be connected.

What is the device good for, and how good?

Internet, email, streaming★★★★★Browsing, email, YouTube and Netflix work; very elaborate websites and many tabs slow things down.
Office & school★★★★★OnlyOffice, LibreOffice and web office for school and work.
Images & art★★★★★GIMP, Krita, Pinta and Inkscape for simple work, with a Wacom tablet. Large files are slow.
Music / DAW★★★★★Listening to music sounds good; for producing, Audacity and small LMMS projects are enough.
Video★★★★★Video editing doesn’t make sense on this device.
Programming & learning★★★★★Python, Scratch and simple web projects work well.
Retro & casual gaming★★★★★RetroArch up to the SNES/PS1 era, DOSBox and ScummVM run brilliantly.
Modern gaming★★★★★The hardware is too old for current games.
Video calls★★★★★Zoom is installed; Teams and Meet in the browser. Camera and microphone work; video calls put a heavy load on the processor.

Good to know

  • Programs: Mac programs (e.g. iMovie, GarageBand) and the desktop versions of Adobe and Microsoft Office do not run. Use the web versions (Microsoft 365, Adobe Express, Photopea) or the free alternatives above.
  • Performance: Core 2 Duo with 4 GB RAM – great for browsing, streaming, office work and retro games, for creative work only on a small scale.
  • Storage: 256 GB internal. System and security updates run quite normally on the internal SSD. Optionally, you can connect a modern external SSD for additional storage or backups; we can supply suitable drives on request.
  • Age: the device is around 16 years old but has been checked and refurbished. Individual parts may nevertheless fail at some point due to age.
  • Wi-Fi & camera: the drivers for Wi-Fi and the FaceTime camera are installed. If they are missing after a major system upgrade, you can reinstall them in a few steps using the guides on help.edumental.ch – our support is happy to help.
  • Keyboard: all keys work as labelled. The only Zorin peculiarity: the Super key (⌘) opens the start menu. The original keyboard and mouse are included.
  • Wacom: Wacom tablets can be connected without any problems – ideal for handwriting, drawing and image editing.
  • DVD: the built-in DVD drive is faulty and should not be used. An external DVD player can be connected.
